Come learn a fun strategy for elevating your classroom discussions. Sixth grade teacher, Mrs. Megan Thatcher, developed the “Let’s Have an Argument” routine that invites students to stand up on their chairs when they have something to add to an argument. The students must listen carefully to what other students are saying so they have something new to add. After learning this strategy, university mathematics educator, Dr. Rachel Bachman, brought this strategy to her college classrooms and was amazed at how quickly and meaningfully the strategy elevated even college classroom discourse. The presentation will include video clips from elementary and university classroom implementation of the strategy. The presenters will also include sample questions that work well for this strategy as well as tips for introducing the routine into your classroom.
